彼女たちには実在のモデルがいる。１世紀ほど前のアメリカで、ラジウムを使っての夜光塗料工場で働いていた、ごく普通の女性たちだ。特別なことなど考えてもいない。働いて給料をもらい買い物をして楽しいひとときを過ごす。いずれ結婚もして、家庭を持ち、子育てをし、いつかその子どもたちも若者になり、輝く青春を謳歌するだろう。ありがちな未来。平凡でささやかな夢に覆われた彼女たちのあるはずだった未来は、ラジウムが放つ放射性物質によって一気に崩れ去る。

病を生き延びた女性工員たちは、もはやかつてのようには未来を見ることができない。その不自由な身体を引きずりながら、会社や政府に対して訴訟を起こす。まさか自分がそんなことをするとは、病気以前の彼女たちは思いもしなかっただろう。病の前と後。その時間と歴史の切断を超えて闘う彼女たちは「ラジウム・ガールズ」と呼ばれるようになる。 　

アルバム『ラジウム・ガールズ2011』が歌うのは、そんな彼女たちの物語だ。もちろん実際の彼女たちのことではない。想像上のラジウム・ガールズたち。いや、今ここにいるラジウム・ガールズたちの物語が、そこでは歌われていた。つまり、「今ここに」と思わざるを得ないような状況の中で作られた歌が、そこにはあった。 　

そしてある日わたしはPhewと会い、彼女たちに取材して作られた「Radium City」と題されたドキュメンタリーがあることを教えられた。25年以上前の映画だ。すぐにYouTubeにアップされたそれを観た。誰もがイメージする公害や労災の訴訟の際の、どこか悲痛な空気を、彼女たちは持たない。あるはずの未来を夢見た輝けるガールだった頃の何かが今も彼女たちに貼り付いて、今の彼女たちを作っているのだとも言いたくなる。年齢や病気で変貌したその姿とはまったく関係ない。最悪の事態のその暗闇の中で、彼女たちは自然発光する。力強ささえ感じた。 　

アルバム『ラジウム・ガールズ2011』から伝わるのも、その奇妙な明るさと強さである。かつて夢見られた未来は閉ざされたかもしれないが、それ故にその暗闇の中で輝く一歩をごく当たり前に踏み出した彼女たちの現在が、まさに彼女たちの未来としてそこにあるのだと、彼女たちの奇妙な明るさと力強さは語っているように思う。彼女たちの今こそが彼女たちの未来なのである。アルバムから見えて来るその姿が、映画には古ぼけた映像を通してはっきりと映っているのが見えた。 　

だとしたら、アルバムだけでなく映画も上映して初めて、日本における「ラジウム・ガールズ」の物語は完結するはずだ。いや、完結するというよりも、それがいくつもの物語の種となり日本中に広がり出し、多くのラジウム・ガールズやボーイズの物語を生み出していくはずだ。まさにラジウム・ガールズこそが、わたしたちの今であり未来であるのだ。
