A special exhibition that looks back on memories of Tokyu Toyoko store in 1985
Tokyu Department Store Toyoko, the “face” of Shibuya Station, will close on March 31, 2020.
According to history, the Toyoko store (then Toyoko department store) opened on November 1, 1934, seven years after all traffic between Shibuya and Kanagawa on the Toyoko Line. With the connection from Shibuya to the railroad, more people are living in the suburbs such as Rural Chofu and Senzoku, and Toyoko Department Store opens as a shop selling daily necessities to residents along the line. Unlike long-established department stores in Nihonbashi and Ginza, it is imagined that at that time it was a bit more for today's supermarkets for ordinary people. After the war, the Toyoko Store West Building (then Tokyu Kaikan) and the Toyoko Store South Building (Shibuya Station West Exit Building) were opened with the development of the city of Shibuya, and have grown as terminal department stores that encompass Shibuya Station.
After that, as you know, with the progress of the redevelopment project around Shibuya Station, the Toyoko Line became underground in March 2013, and the Toyoko Store East Building closed a little earlier. SHIBUYA STREAM and SHIBUYA SCRAMBLE SQUARE are open on the site, but the West and South Buildings are finally closed this spring (the food show on the first basement will continue to open), and full-scale demolition work will be performed after the Olympics. It is a plan.
Towards the end of business, the special exhibition space on the 7th floor of the Tokyu Department Store Toyoko Store West Building and the Tokyu Food Show wall on the 1st basement are holding photo exhibitions and special exhibitions that reflect on the memories of the Toyoko Store for 85 years. Here, I would like to introduce some of the contents of the planned exhibition currently being held.
First, at the special venue on the 7th floor of the West Building of the Tokyu Department Store, advertising materials such as newspapers and pamphlets, wrapping paper, and nostalgic Toyoko department store goods are displayed, mainly from the time of opening in 1934 to the 1970s.
In addition, a diorama that faithfully reproduces Shibuya Station in 1964, and a photo spot of the phantom aerial cable car “Hibari”, which has been operating only for two years from 25 to 26, just after the war, are installed. It can be said that Shibuya was the busiest city after the postwar recovery.
In addition, there are TV commercials from the 1960s and 1950s that missed the phrase “Toyoko Norenmachi ♪”, as well as letters and messages with memories of the Toyoko department store sent by the general public.
The "Shibuchika Special Panel" posted on the wall of the Tokyu Food Show on the first basement floor looks back on the history of the Toyoko store from 1934 to today with valuable photographs. The length of the display panel, which lasts nearly 20 meters, should give you a fresh sense of the depth of the 85-year history of Toyoko Department Store.
It is said that the contents of the exhibition on the special floor on the 7th floor will be changed every period. We recommend that you visit several times before closing. Since the demolition of the building will begin after the Olympics, I would like to take this opportunity to carefully burn the memories. .
